Visiting the old and extensive trolleybus system of Seattle is a great experience. This classic and extensive US american system performs very well and shows although only operating high floor trolleybuses - that even with this technique it is possible to serve the city´s puplic transport demands very well.
Beside a dense downtown network there are several suburban/interurban lines with long runs from downtown. Part of the high performance is the high quality overhead network.
Only houerly trolleybuses of line 7 reach Prentice Street - a part of Rainier Beach about 25 km from downtown Seattle. Here articulated 4255 (built 1990/91 by BREDA) comes to an end of It`s 70 minutes run - behind Lake Washington can be seen.
In front of Union Station articulated 4238 on line 7 is turning into 4 Aven.
Maybe one of the last new built high floor trolleybuses in the world - the 2002 built Gillig 4187 - is working route 3 on 3 Ave. towards downtown.
There are two ways by trolleybus to reach downtown Seattle from the University District - one by line 43 or by line 49. At the common terminus at 12 Ave. trolleybus 4246 (line 49) overtakes 4227 (line 43)
The interurban line 44 is the only trolleybusline in Seattle`s system not reaching the City`s center. Line 44 workes between University District (NE Pacific Pl.) and the City of Ballard. At theouter terminus at 32 Ave.NW articulated BREDA`s 4223 and 4256 can be seen waiting
At the junction of W.Galer and Anne Ave. Gillig 4172 is working on line 13
With the opening of Seattle`s light rail system a new link was built between line 14 to Hunter Blvd. and Rainer Ave. - Where the new Mt. Baker Transit Center was built as a transfer point between Light Rail and trolleybuses. Here trollleybus 4178 on line 14 can be seen in it`s new terminus.
Trolleybus 4178 is passing the new overhead at 31. Ave and McClellan
